Visiting Mr. Samohýl

Už dávno som chcel navštíviť povestné zbierky pána Samohýla v Zlíne, len akosi nebolo dosť času. Vždy bolo v práci niečo dôležité a bolo treba venovať sa veciam, čo nás živia. Táto zima je však akási iná. Teplá, bez trochy snehu a zrazu nebolo do čoho pichnúť. Žiadna objednávka. Nič sa nepredáva a pochmúrne myšlienky sa ako zlý duch motajú hlavou. Teraz je ten správny čas! Napadlo mi, že je treba spraviť si náladu a pozrieť niečo pekné. Zdvihol som teda telefón, zavolal priateľovi do Zlína a naplánoval termín návštevy. Múzeum zatiaľ ešte nefunguje, no dá sa dostať do depozitárov a dokonca aj do dielní, kde sa vyrábajú verné kópie Bugatti Typ 35.

For a long time I have wanted to visit and see the collection of Mr. Samohýl in Zlín, but I just never had enough time. There was always something more important at work and make things for living. But this winter is kind of different. It is warm without any snow and I had nothing to do. No orders at work, no business to make and dark thoughts are twisting in my head. Now it is the time! I thought I should lift up my spirit and see something nice. I picked up the phone, called a friend in Zlín and planned a visit. The museum is still not working, but it is possible to get to the depositary and even to the workshops where the copies of Bugatti Type 35 are produced.

Bol som veľmi rád, že si na nás našli čas. Zbierkami nás sprevádzal Jiří Valach. Bolo vidieť, že sa v zbierke vyzná. Poznal históriu každého exponátu a dal si záležať s výkladom. Zastali sme pri každom aute či motocykli a  on rozprával a rozprával. Vedel pikošky zo života bývalých majiteľov, veselé príbehy z čias dávno zašlých. Zbierky sú nádherné. V rade vedľa seba stáli Laurinky, Škodovky, Bugattky, Mercedesy, Alfy a mnohé iné už zabudnuté značky výrobcov z celého sveta. Chodili sme pomedzi tieto stroje a až tu sme si uvedomili, aký obrovský skok vo vývoji sa podaril za jediný rok či dva. Zmeny v dizajne ,výkone, spoľahlivosti, a bezpečnosti napredovali obrovskými skokmi dopredu. Dnešný inžinieri v podstatnej miere už iba zdokonaľujú to, čo už bolo dávno vymyslené. Človek, ktorý chce vlastniť nejakého veterána, by mal najskôr navštíviť podobnú zbierku alebo technické múzeum, aby sa mohol správne rozhodnúť v  ktorom období sa chce pohybovať a ako bude svojho veterána používať. Pretože dokompletovať a spojazdniť aj sto rokov starý kúsok zaberie obrovský kus času, úsilia a nemalé finančné zdroje. Človeku sa môže stať, že nakoniec stroj, ktorý mu zabral mnohokrát aj štvrtinu života, nie je presne to čo chcel. Každý z nás je iný a každému sa páči iné obdobie. Ja som sa napríklad našiel medzi rokmi 1925-1932. Páčia sa mi aj staršie a aj mladšie stroje, no motocykle a autá z tohto obdobia mi prirástli k srdcu najviac.

I was very glad that they found some time for us. Jiří Valach guided us through the collections and it was obvious that he knows everything about it. He was familiar with the history of each showpiece and he did a great job with commentaries as well. We stopped by every single car or motorcycle and he talked and talked. He also knew about those little stories of the previous owners of the vehicles, the stories of the times that are long gone. The collections are beautiful. Laurins, Skodas, Bugattis, Mercedeses, Alfas and also many forgotten brands lined up in a row. We walked among these machines and realized what a progress took place within one or two years in the past. Changes in design, output, reliability and safety took great steps ahead. The engineers of today in a significant way just improve the things that were invented before. If someone wants to own and old-timer should definitely visit such collection or a technical museum to make the right choice about the era from which his old-timer should be and how he is going to use it. Mainly because restoring and finishing maybe a hundred years old  jewel will take a great amount of time, effort and of course costs may rise to a significant level. It may also happen that the machine that we restored for maybe a quarter of our life will be not exactly the one we dreamed about. Everyone of us is different and we like different machines from different eras. For example I fell in love to a period between 1925 and 1932. I like older and even younger machines but the motorcycles and cars from this period just grew to my heart the most.

Po troch hodinách strávených nielen pozeraním. Plný nových myšlienok a chuti do práce sme sa pobrali do priestorov, kde skladujú zatiaľ nerenovované kúsky. Bol to jeden z depozitárov, v ktorých boli ďalšie a ďalšie autá. Práce tak na 100 rokov, poznamenal som. Nie, na 300! Toto je len prvý sklad. ,,Sme vlastne štvrtá najväčšia česká automobilka." Trochu s humorom poznamenal Jiří. Je úžasné, že niekto dokáže venovať tak obrovské úsilie a pokračovať v šľapajách starého pána Samohýla. Verím tomu, že je možné vyzbierať zo vstupného na základný chod múzea, no je vysoko nepravdepodobné, aby bol tento projekt ziskový. Priamo vedľa depozitára sa nachádzali dielne pre čalúnnikov, stolárov, klampiarov a iných majstrov. Je to naozaj úžasné. Všetci títo ľudia sa venujú renovácii veteránov pre vaše múzeum?  ,,Áno . Máme toho ešte veľmi veľa ,čo máme dokončiť." Postupovali sme ďalej a tu zrazu bola pred nami tá povestná dielňa na Bugatti.

After three hours spent not just by watching, full of new thoughts and motivation we went to the premises where the pieces in the original condition are stored. It was just one of the depositaries where another and another cars were. It has to be a job for another 100 years I replied. No, for 300! This is just the first storage place. „Basically we are the fourth biggest car plant in Czech republic.“ Replied Jiří with a humour. It is wonderful that someone can put such effort  to it and follow the foot steps of old Mr. Samohýl. I believe that it is possible to gather some money from the entrance fees for the basic running costs of the museum, but it is almost impossible that this project is profitable. Right next to the depository the upholstery, carpenter and tinsmith workshops were placed. It is really fantastic. All of these people work on restoration of old-timers for your museum? „Yes, and there is so much to be finished.“ We walked on and there it was...the famous Bugatti workshop. 

Ostali sme ohromení. V rade za sebou stáli štyri rozostavané a jedna už hotová aj s kompresorom. Paráda, cítil som sa ako v inej dobe. Na pracovnom stole ležali nové bloky, odliatky, zdvihátka, ventily, v regáli ležali bubny, poloosi, kolesá, no skrátka rozpracovanosť na stavbu vernej kópie  Bugatti 35. Mali sme to šťastie a dokonca nám náš sprievodca naštartoval onú krásku s kompresorom. Rev z výfukov sa ozýval po celom komplexe, ale pre nás to bola báseň. Ako malé deti. Doslova ako malé deti sme sa radovali. Chcel by som sa poďakovať za možnosť pozrieť si všetku tú nádheru. Jedinečný zážitok z výletu v nás ostane asi už na vždy. Verím, že ak budú na svete ľudia, ktorý chcú a dokážu darovať kus seba na zachovanie odkazu pre ďalšie generácie, nebude to s nami také zlé, ako bežne počúvame z televízii .

We were simply overwhelmed. In one row there were four Bugattis in a proces of building and one supercharged completed piece. Fantastic, I just felt like I was in a different time period. New engine blocks, casts, tappets, valves were lying on the work table and in the shelf we could see brake drums, transaxles, wheels. Simply parts for one true copy of Bugatti 35 to be built. We were lucky and our guide cranked up the supercharged beauty for us. The roar from the exhausts filled up the whole area and it was just like a beautiful music for us. We were happy like small kids. I would like to thank for an opportunity to see all this beauty. An extraordinary experience that will remain in our hearts and minds forever. I believe that there still will be people willing to offer piece of themselves to keep the message for the next generations. Things are just not as bad as we often see and hear on TV.
